the best rules for follow for family pictures! this post is long awaited and I’m excited to share with you today! I LOVE dressing up and planning outfits. family pictures are extra fun and below are a few examples of things we’ve worn for family photos.

HOW MANY COLORS?

I think 3-4 colors is pleasing. too many and it’s a bit busy/ disconnected and too little and it takes me back to the ‘white tee and jeans on the beach’ looks – which isn’t bad if that’s your vibe – but for typical family photos you want to coordinate not be so ‘matchy matchy‘.

PICK MOM’S OUTFIT FIRST

as a mom I feel like we stress about what everyone will wear – in reality everyone else is an accent to the ‘mom’ of the photo. wear what YOU feel best in and plan everyone else’s looks around your great outfit!

COLOR SCHEME

my best tip for choosing colors is selecting colors that coordinate with your home decor. you’ll likely be printing these pictures and framing them – so if they match whichever room you’ll be displaying them – you’ll be so happy with your color choices!

WEAR PRINTS

I LOVE prints and I’m pretty confident in my print mixing but if you’d like to keep things simple here is an easy rule – 1 bold print, 2 small prints, add in solids (usually 3 colors)

POSING TIPS

don’t worry about posing so much, have fun, smile and let kids be kids.

they’ll probably want to run around, or look at you instead of the camera – work with that!

hold hands and swing arms, or make silly faces at each other to get the kids to laugh – those genuine moments are the ones you’ll cherish – not everyone standing stiff with fake smiles

something new I’ve learned – is take pictures with just your spouse too – it’s fun to get posing together like in engagement photos – celebrate your love.

as a summary here are the best rules to follow for family pictures

– choose mom’s outfit first (coordinate everyone around her)

I hope these tips were helpful and that you’ll be able to confidently head into your next photo session for family pictures knowing what to wear, how to pose and just to have fun making and cherishing those memories with your family!
