today I’m sharing indoor photo shoot tips …

a few weeks ago I had a fun chance to take some pictures inside and so I pulled up a chair, made a DIY backdrop, got myself all dolled up and grabbed a faux flower for a little photoshoot on self timer and my tripod!

BACKDROP + LOCATION

I usually try to find an empty wall in my house, typically somewhere well lit, by a window. for this shoot I actually sat in the middle of my living room but put up a curtain behind me. I used a clothing rack stand and draped over it a few colored curtains (similar here). this adds texture/color and gives me the option to be against a backdrop that isn’t a flat wall.

I try facing the light too, you’ll notice my cheeks and other points of my face have natural highlights. try different angles too until you find what you like, and what you feel is most flattering.

POSES

I chose to sit on a chair for this shoot. rather than just sit in the center and face the camera, I decided to angle my chair and then tried a variety of positions to sit. I kneeled on the chair, put one leg up, one down, leaned back, leaned forward, etc. I kept moving around.

for facial expressions, I smiled, I did some flirty face, acted silly, was more moody and serious. there’s never any fault in trying multiple things and just going for it. I didn’t quite know what ‘look’ I was going for in this little shoot. but just after a few minutes I found some pictures that I thought were fun. they showcased so many sides of me and I felt beautiful. and that’s what taking photos is all about right? having a good time and expressing yourself.

PROPS

this is probably the most fun of the indoor photoshoot tips because the possibilities are endless. what are your showcasing? what are you wanting to share? I’ve seen people write captions about a topic and then use props in the photo that correlate (a phone prop with a caption like “calling all __ “)

I feel like when I’m stumped on what to do in pictures, I like holding a prop of some sort. it’s easy in outfit photos to grab onto the corner of my top or put my hands in my pockets but inside or more ‘editorial’ photos might require more effort in figuring out something to do with your hands.

I have a flower obsession and an abundance of faux flowers in my house, so this was an easy prop for me. I also could have grabbed a tube of lipstick or a hat to hold too.

I’ve seen other bloggers hold fruit or quirky accessories and those also make adorable photo shoot props too.

OUTFIT

I wanted to bring a lot of color into this simple indoor photoshoot so I chose to wear a printed floral dress. I’m obsessed with this style from Dot Dot Dream boutique ( a local Utah boutique ). shop my earrings here

I love the contrast between the pink, purple and peach yet the colors all flow and compliment each other. have fun experimenting with different looks, you can see in this photoshoot I used a white sheet behind me so the purple really popped!

I hope these indoor photoshoot tips were helpful and that you can take your pictures to the next level. I know I’m always trying to improve and try new things. I take inspiration from girls I follow on instagram/ Pinterest and am working on getting out of my comfort zone. I’m not an innovative ‘poser’ lol but I do try to stay relevant and stick to my ‘style’ as a lifestyle blogger.

the most important tip is to stay true to you. I don’t directly copy others’ but I do draw inspiration from them. so have fun! and be true to you and your style!
